kevin keul blurs the line between painting and sculpture. he combines oils, glazes, and varnishes with relief, construction, and modeling.
inspired by the aging process that occurs between objects and their environments over time, keul finds content in elements of industrial tools and constructions.
with such objects as bolts, rivets, saws, and wrenches, keul creates feelings of tension, movement, reflection, and symmetry. he explores the environments they have been locked in, and frames them, as to cause an immediate stop and start of self contained atmosphere.
by aging and texturizing the containments, they reflect the natural characteristics that come about with objects over time.
containing multiple layers, some pieces even invite the viewer to interactively become involved by allowing them to open doors and satisfy their curiosity of what lies behind.
other pieces leave the viewer stunned at the relation between consciously knowing what an object is used for, and then seeing it placed in an aesthetically pleasing context.
keul's unique body of work has strong composition, with attention to design elements such as contrasting and complementing color and texture.
keul's wall sculptures translate conceptual to actual in a comforting environment, and evoke feelings of calm temperament.
