My work explores landscape, the body, and the sublime. Unlike traditional landscape paintings, which depict static, pictorial views, my abstract paintings grapple with our physical, bodily connection to nature. It is the frightening, uneasy beauty of nature that interests me, as in moments of overwhelming awe we are not separate from nature, but connected to the universal processes of birth, growth, decay and death. Our understanding of these processes is deeply intuitive, as these same forces rule the workings of our own bodies.
Based in memory and feeling of place, my imagery draws from personal experience. From the gray coastal landscapes of the Pacific Northwest where I grew up, to the dry golden green of Northern California where I have lived since 1994, I begin with the emotional memory of color, light, and texture. Working intuitively, developing space with dark and light, I expose a visceral landscape in constant flux and change.
Shausta Eckland is a Seattle native relocated to the bay area in 1998. She is a working photographer emphasizing on fine art, women studies, and also does some commercial work. This show will be her first in the bay area, emphasizing a new direction in her work - the floral abstract. Inspired by the erotic nature of Georgia O'Keefe and the passion of the Pre-Raphaelites, she hopes to excite your senses in seeing the natural world in a new light.
